HAULED, PACKED & SOLD

Bontelabo’s history is of the sea and its haul, the city and its people. For generations Bergen has put fish on the tables of Rio and Rome, London and Tokyo. And it's been the real characters of Bontelabo who hauled, packed and sold this global appetite for the North Sea.

Rich culture

Bontelabo is a place of contrasts, from the porters to the brokers, the salty wet sea air to the dry cold of the icy-store. The vibrant energy and sounds of constant import and export. A rich culture, between the soil and salt; Bergen’s port to an endless stream of exotic influence.

Import & Export

Boats from local island communities moored alongside visiting trawlers from Scotland to Spain. Loading Europe’s largest freezer with thousands of tons of catch; packed and ported. Sold on by the quick minded upstairs brokers. On to markets and dinner table destinations across the world.

BERGEN, NORWAY

This UNESCO City of Gastronomy and historic sites has pride in its Fishpacking District. Through its export Bergen has given the ‘Scousers’ of Liverpool their name and the Portuguese their beloved bacalao.

cultural and commercial influence

A new buzz is entering the space. Bontelabo’s industrial warehouse and offices are now welcoming the new. An urban district, a public place; craft and commerce, locals and visitors, old and young. Maintaining its role as Bergen’s port of cultural and commercial influence.

DYNAMIC CITY

This dynamic city is continuing to grow and evolve, as it has for centuries. Bontelabo, Europe’s largest freezer, has now been switched off, the porters have hung up their rubber aprons.

Bringing together the city’s salty history with its inspirational future. A district destination for the urban community and their overseas visitors.
